Transferring Unused Tax Allowance

Does anyone know if you can claim for unused Tax Allowance going back previous years?

I can't actually find out for certain, although the HMRC Website implies that we can.

It's something I read on Pensioners Forum a little while ago that started this as my wife's State Pension plus her tiny Occupational Pension leaves a significant amount of her Tax Allowance unused, and has done since she retired in 2011 when she was 61.

We've filled in the form for 2014 - 2015 but, as I said, info on the HMRC site does hint that we could backdate claims. stevmk2

That's an interesting thought as Mrs.G has just enquired about transferring tax allowance to me for the coming year, although I thought that this was a new thing. I'll have a look.

Not as far as I know, it's only happening soon that we can transfer allowances between spouses, and then only £1000 of unused allowance can be swapped. If it could have been done previously they wouldn't need to change the rules to make this happen now.

It is a new thing George. Somewhere on line you can register your interest in it ,
PS The sum is now £1100 since the budget, presumably they will contact you by email at a later date.

Re: Transferring Unused Tax Allowance

Thanks for the feedback folks.

I found references to this dating back to October 2014 but the HMRC website implies that you can go back to previous years because it helpfully tells you that if the year in question is 2010 - 2011 you then put 2011 in the box.

It also tells you that you must do a separate form 575(T) for each year that you wish considered; - it clearly says "Fill in form 575 or ask HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) to post you a copy."

I believe that is the form to fill in for future allowance transfers, looks very much like what we have recently filled in. They announced it in budget of 2014 for this year.

A "Married Couples Allowance" is a different thing. We are talking about one spouse transfering unused personal tax free allowance to the other spouse.

It's the form 575(T)you need to fill-in Alan - that's why I put the link!
"Married Couples Allowance" confused me -at first. stevmk2

You can claim over paid tax back up to six years...unless they changed the rules after I retired.

That's a different topic Sue.
