He's right.

What makes you think it's illegal?

I was always told it was when I was learning to drive. I had to take shoes with me were suitable for driving on my instructor was quite strict about it. So much so all these years later I still have my driving shoes in the car and change into them religiously each trip.

This is where you enter a gray area.

It's not illegal to drive barefoot but it is illegal to drive without proper control of the vehicle(shoes or not)

When your instructor said "Suitable footwear" what he/she may have meant was flat, flexible shoes rather than stilettos.

Right so looks like I'm lending him my car for the forseeable future. My forfeit. Shame I was looking forward to him cleaning my bathroom for a month.

It isn't illegal to drive barefoot providing you can safely do so. If your feet are wet, for instance, it wouldn't be safe as they could slip on the pedals.

So could certain shoe soles...especially wooden brogue types.

The word "sensible" is the key.....and no prosecution would come about for not wearing shoes...it'd be too difficult to prove it was a factor for an accident.

Motoring magazines used to maintain the best fuel consumption was obtained by driving in your socks.
My friend will drive with flip flops but I tell her off, bloody dangerous things to even walk in let alone drive!

Re: Is this legal ?

I often drive barefoot. It is surprising how much control you actually have - far more than in heavy shoes/boots/wellies when you cannot feel the pedals. The foot controls on modern cars are so light today and you need to feel what you are doing IMO. As for wet, it is very easy to forget that your shoes are wet when you get into a car and I have slipped with the pedals and had to rub my shod feet on the carpet before driving.
