Monoprints

I love doing them.
Even if you think you've inked the surface in exactly the same way, every time, you still never quite know how they'll turn out.
It's that element of intrigue and randomness that makes them such an exciting way of working..
that total surprise as you lift the paper at the end to reveal the drawing

I'll take photos of others I have in sketchbooks at school next week
but here is a recent one from my journal.
The lilly was part of an Easter bunch of flowers

Re: Monoprints

Oops I didn't come back to explain did I?!!

So...
You roll printing ink out thinly on to a flat surface
I call it the "Orange peel" look in class
Leave it to go off for 5 minutes or so
Then place your paper on the ink, carefully as even finger marks will show
Then draw using a hard tool. I tend to favour biro but you can use anything
Ideally you would peel your paper away and then run it through a printing press so that the image transfers to another piece of paper and would be the right way around
I don't have a press so all the monoprints are inverted images of the drawing but I don't mind that.
You can also lay another piece of paper over your "drawn on" ink and roll over it with a clean roller to get a negative image

The carrot in the photo is a negative from a monoprint
