Another clue: the only thing you'd see when it is enclosed are the three electrical contact pins.

I suppose that the thing it goes into could be lethal if misused.

And the end with the contacts goes into a battery charger.

You're all skirting round the actual object!

It's the innards of a rechargeable battery for a cordless drill.

Both of my batteries now fail to hold a charge, so I bought two new ones (quite cheaply, if anyone wants to know) which seem to work properly, so I thought I'd take one of the old ones apart to investigate.

There are clearly twelve 1 1/2V cells, but I'm afraid I don't know the function of the cylindrical bit with the electrical connectors on its end.

Maybe one of the blokes on here (or, of course, the women!) can enlighten me.
