Nuclear Alert Sirens

Forgot to mention this yesterday, . . I was out the back washing the car when the twin warning sirens went off, all large towns have them as a way of warning of an imminent attack.

They were undulating like you've heard in WW2 films and went on for 3 mins, . . then they stopped for about 5 mins then started up again, but with a continuous tone signifying the all clear.

I don't think they're used for 'imminent attack' but for 'tests' and possible problems at the power station - least that's what I was told.

The sirens are also tested here every few years, come to think of it I haven't heard them for a couple of years now...

Re: Nuclear Alert Sirens

It's the first time I've heard them in years too, . . the large petro chemical plant 4 miles from us have sirens to warn of a chemical accident but it was'nt their sirens that went off.

We live just along the road from a huge Gas Terminal (St Fergus) everyday about 11am these sirens go off, then 10 mins later the all clear...
