BBC and the Cold War

During the Cold War, I worked as a civilian for the RAF in West Berlin. The only radio stations we ever listened to was BFBS and BBC short wave. I sometimes get very nostalgic for the day “back then” and there's something that brings it back more than any pop tune of the time. It's the BBC call sign. What I'd like to know is if this is only a snip of a larger composition or if this is all there is

Re: BBC and the Cold War

It's a tune called Lillibullero, composed by Thomas, Lord Wharton around 1680.
It's the BBC World Service's signature tune.

A TV series by that name, is it? I don't think we get it here. I'll have to look it up.

Fantastic! You are a gem! Now to find the recording and down-load it onto my hard disk!

Re: BBC and the Cold War

It was the voice of freedom during WWII. Those countries where BBC was banned could tune in to the ... _ signal that let Germany and occupied countries know England was still free and fighting, despite propaganda to the contrary.

Just one of the many uniquely British assets the Tories have destroyed.

Just go to YouTube there's loads of choice. Lots of different versions. Here's a nice one ...

Watch "Lillibullero - BBC World Service" on YouTube
