Biden to ask Americans to wear masks for 100 days

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-55182309

US President-elect Joe Biden has said he will ask Americans to wear masks for his first 100 days in office to curtail the spread of coronavirus. He told CNN he believed there would be a "significant reduction" in Covid-19 cases if every American wore a face covering.
Mr Biden also said he would order masks to be worn in US government buildings and transportation facilities.

Constitutional experts say a US president has no legal authority to order Americans to wear masks, but Mr Biden said during the interview he and his Vice-President Kamala Harris would set an example by donning face coverings. The Democrat also told CNN he will retain Dr Anthony Fauci, the top US infectious disease expert, as chief medical adviser to the new administration's Covid-19 team.

Covid: Biden vows 100m vaccinations for US in first 100 days

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-55238092

At a news conference on Tuesday, Mr Biden laid out how he plans to address the pandemic in his first 100 days in office. That period is traditionally seen as a benchmark for new presidents to make their mark with new policies and ideas.

He vowed to get "at least 100 million Covid vaccine shots into the arms of the American people".

"My first 100 days won't end the Covid-19 virus. I can't promise that. But we did not get into this mess quickly. We're not going to get out of it quickly," he said at the event in Delaware, giving few details of how the largest vaccination programme in US history would be carried out.

Getting 100 million vaccines to Americans in just over three months is not expected to be easy. The large geographical size of the US and the logistics of rolling out a new vaccine could present challenges in achieving the goal.

By comparison, 51.8% of Americans older than six months were vaccinated against flu in 2019-20, according to the CDC. The US population is 316 million people, which means that around 158 million people were given flu jabs between July 2019 and May 2020.
Well ..... that might be a too ambitious, IMO ..... but, as we know, US citizens have a "can do" attitude, so, if the will is there .....

US President-elect Joe Biden gets vaccine live on TV

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-55401706

Mr Biden joins a growing number of political leaders getting the jab, including Vice-President Mike Pence and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

"I'm doing this to demonstrate that people should be prepared when it's available to take the vaccine," Mr Biden said from Newark, Delaware, where he got the jab live on TV. "There's nothing to worry about."

Mr Biden's wife, Jill Biden, received her first dose earlier in the day, the president-elect said. Mr Biden's running mate, Vice-President-elect Kamala Harris and her husband Doug Emhoff are expected to receive their first shots next week.

Biden unveils $1.9tn coronavirus stimulus package

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...imulus-package

Joe Biden has unveiled a $1.9tn coronavirus relief proposal, aimed at urgently combating the pandemic and the economic crisis it has triggered. As the US faces its deadliest stage of the pandemic, Biden described the moment as “a crisis of deep human suffering”.

The ambitious, wide-ranging plan includes $160bn to bolster vaccination and testing efforts, and other health programs and $350bn for state and local governments, as well as $1tn in relief to families, via direct payments and unemployment insurance.

“There’s no time to waste,” Biden said. “We have to act and we have to act now.”

Details of the aid package had been released by Biden’s transition team earlier on Thursday.

If adopted, the proposal would tack on $1,400 to the $600 in direct payments for individuals that Congress approved most recently. “We will finish the job of getting a total of $2,000 in relief to people who need it the most,” Biden said.

Supplemental unemployment insurance would also increase to $400 a week from $300 a week and would be extended to September.

“During this pandemic, millions of Americans, through no fault of their own, have lost the dignity and respect that comes with a job and a paycheck,” Biden said on Thursday, speaking from Wilmington, Delaware. “There is real pain overwhelming the real economy.”

Biden ran on the promise that he would deliver Americans through the coronavirus crisis, and more recently has pledged to ramp up vaccination efforts, and oversee the administering of 100m covid-19 jabs during his first 100 days.

Biden signs 10 executive orders as part of 'wartime' Covid plan

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-55750884

President Joe Biden has signed a raft of executive orders to boost the fight against Covid which has ravaged the US.

Vaccination will be accelerated and testing increased. Emergency legislation will be used to increase production of essentials like masks.

Announcing the 10 measures, Mr Biden said it would take months to defeat the pandemic but America would "get through this" if people stood together.

The moves come a day after Mr Biden was sworn in as the 46th president.

In a break with former President Donald Trump, the policy stresses a national strategy rather than relying on states to decide what is best.

The Trump administration was widely accused of failing to get to grips with the pandemic.

In terms of total deaths from coronavirus, the US is the worst-hit country with more than 406,000 lives lost *, according to Johns Hopkins University - more Americans had already died in the pandemic than in the whole of World War Two. Nearly 24.5 million have been infected.

Re: Biden and COVID-19

Biden has the same problem as our federal government he has very limited power as far as mask wearing is concerned - it is a state issue.

What he has done is implement quarantine on entry which was the first thing Australia did when it banned international travel and told the cruise ships to bugger off home last March.

Restricting movement seems to a basic requirement to prevent the spread of this disease and the lack of action in this regard has doubtless contributed to nearly half a million deaths in the US and nearly 100,000 in the UK.

US Democrats push ahead with relief plan

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-56304885

A compromise in the US Senate means America's third major spending package to deal with the impact of the coronavirus pandemic can move forward.

The $1.9tn (£1.4tn) plan has been championed by President Joe Biden as a way to help struggling citizens.

Democrats in the Senate compromised over the issue of federal unemployment benefit, lowering it from $400 to $300 a week but extending it to 6 September.

The Senate's final vote on the package is expected in the coming days.

"Now that this agreement has reached, we are going to power through the rest of this process and get this bill done," Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer predicted.

Mr Biden's Democrats and their allies have an effective majority in the evenly split Senate due to Vice-President Kamala Harris's casting vote.

But the tiny margin means they need every Democratic senator to support their plans.

America's worst public health crisis in a century (AKA The Trump Legacy) has left nearly 523,000 people dead and 29 million infected, with a current unemployment rate of 6.2%.
