There was much that was unsavoury about Churchill but he did oppose appeasement when many of his ilk were going along with it and it was Churchill who inspired Britain to stand against the Nazis. For that we should be eternally grateful. He also promoted Home Rule for Scotland and Ireland, promoted the convention of human rights and dreamed of European unity. Churchill is not a popular person in Australia. His lies to the government of Australia, his attempt to stop the return of Australian troops to defend the country against the Japanese, his attempt to divert Australian troops to Singapore where they would have been incarcerated are just a few things that eventually led to The ANZUS Alliance of 1951.PM Curtin said in 1942, "“Australia looks to America, free of any pangs as to our traditional links or kinship with the United Kingdom.” when he discovered that he couldn't trust Churchill as far as he could throw him.
