Houseplants need inspiration

My husband collects orchids so we always have several in flower but none seem to like our bedroom. I am looking for something that doesn't need direct sunlight and doesn't mind a cool over night as we tend to have the window open even in the winter. Don't mind if it flowers or just stays green as long as it will survive.

How about a Cymbidium. They always seem as tough as old boots. I've had Orchids for years and they certainly have withstood everything I've thrown at them.

Tradescantia is a good plant for a cold room.

Short term, the miniature winter cyclamen in pots are a blaze of colour in the garden centres at the mo and probably will be until after Christmas. They will wilt on a sunny window sill so are happier in a cool room.

Great thank you, think the cyclamen is the best idea I could have a couple one on the dressing table and one on my bedside chair. They would look very pretty.

Yes, they're pretty aren't they Julie. I believe they need good natural light but not dirrect sunshine, and don't soak the corms when watering/feeding, or they are likely to rot. I usually put water in a the saucer underneath and let it soak up gradually.

Re: Houseplants need inspiration

I have a big one in the sittingroom, sounds daft probably but I water it with my egg water (boiled eggs every morning) and it has flowered every year for the past 5 just coming up to buds again now. Not sure why it works but it seems to, always water from the bottom too as you suggest.
