To wash or not to wash?

I need specialist advice on fashion in the garden ......

Should I wash my gardening jacket? It is an old blue hoody and nicely 'seasoned', the pockets are full of very special things such as bits of wire, seeds and a very grubby looking hanky. I like the hood because if the wind blows, I just pull my hood up, it protects my neck from the breeze and stops my sunhat from blowing away ......

I am worried that my jacket will lose its character or fall apart if washed, what would you do?

Well it depends gal - how long, since its had a wash. If years .... then its likely to fall apart of its own accord !

My rule of thumb is if it dont smell so bad that its not attracting flies leave it alone .....
How can you look like a proper gardener if you dont have a tatty old jacket on .....

Hi Maggie yes I would wash it in case it harboured germs..
..then I would be upset if it fell apart and wish I hadn't washed it
Then I would look on Ebay for another one .

Yes, I'd wash too...maybe it's the dirt holding it together!
I'm very posh, I have two jackets One is brown and doesn't show the mud (the cuffs are held in place with elastic bands - courtesy of the postman - perfect fit) The other is navy with a white collar and cuffs, which I have to wash when the cuffs get grubby.

No, no, no, no washing. If you look and feel smart when you're in the garden, how are you going to get stuck in ?

Goodness no way, you are a gardener girl, wear it till it falls apart. One thing missing, my Grandad used to carry mints in his pocket, loose not in paper and he always said get a mint Anne and one day his teeth were in there but I was brought up so well I had to eat the mint or he may be upset, so get some teeth for your pocket!

You could always put it on & get someone to hose you down with a jet washer! Though you might fall apart too! Oh, and pick a warm day 'cos you'd have to stay outside 'til you're dry!
