Drs pay

Drs pay,! Now I agree that Drs should be paid a good wage, but should they expect to be paid extra for working 'unsocial hours ' ? Surely there are no 'unsocial hours ' for Drs, Life and care have no concept of hours a Dr swears on oath to save lives, nothing to say what time of day /night,and unthinkable that a Dr should go on strike

Re: Drs pay

I quite agree with you.

At the beginning of this month I had to wait for a Doctor to confirm a death and he arrived after 11 and the bill was £165
just to sign a piece of paper.

Re: Drs pay

I think it goes a bit deeper than that deylon.
I was watching a hospital doctor on the news earlier on.
if his shift was due to end at 9.00am but he was kept on until 11.00am he wouldn't be paid for the two hours.
They should be paid for the hours they work.
Junior doctors have had the **** taken out of them for years.
I support them in their stand.

Anyone else feel that they should be treated like slaves?

I agree they should be paid for the hours they work Browbeaten , I also feel that Specialists /Senior Drs should also work unsocial hours. But unions want extra pay for working ' unsocial hours ' i.e nights and weekends ,like other workers get,how can you put a price on life?

Re: Drs pay

Of course they should be paid for out-of-hours work.
Many/most will already have worked far more than an 8-hour day.

My gripe re 'Drs pay' is a little different.
Specialists in particular schedule appointments so close together that there is no way they are not going to get behind and they keep people waiting and waiting ...
The later in the day, the more this occurs.
They just want to make sure they have no 'down-time' because of 'no-shows' etc.
Ya gotta keep that money rolling in.
To hell with the paying patients - they are treated with contempt - their time has no value.

Years ago, I had a specialist appointment (in a field unlikely to have had any early morning emergencies) for 9am.
I got to see the prick at 10.30.
Nothing from him or the receptionist about the delay.

He sent a bill for, say, $200.
I wrote on the bill that my time was (then) worth $20 hour and sent a cheque for $30 less than the amount asked.
Never heard another word.

I was a coal miner for 16 years and we didn't get paid extra for working shifts.

Re: Drs pay

I have very recently changed my mind on this one. originally I thought they are well paid and should not ask for more but listening to junior doctors it is not about more pay it's about them want to work less hours.

They work 70 plus hours a week and as my husband works 60 I can absolutely say we do not want our doctors doing the same. By the end of the week my husband goes into what we laughingly call his zombie period where he does everything automatically with no real thought at all. Do we really want our health crisis to be treated by people who have worked to many hours they can't even dress themselves without guidance, who can't decide or even stay awake long enough to eat a meal ?

I know I want my health to be taken seriously by people who are alert and fit themselves.

So lets not make this about money and say they are better off than us because it's about our health and safety.

Re: Drs pay

Well said Julie. I would not want to be treated by a doctor who was not fully awake. When my niece (now a GP) was a junior doctor, she had been a vegeterian, but gave that up. As she said, she was so busy, she just had to grab anything she could and didn't have time for a proper meal.

After qualifying, she emigrated to Canada. I wonder if things are a lot better there.
