Meanwhile in France, Frexit Gathers Pace

French Eurosceptics have launched a petition demanding a referendum on France’s continued membership of the European Union.

Launched by referendum-ue.org, the campaign explains that since 55 per cent of French citizens voted to reject the European Constitution in 2005, no referendum on the European Union has taken place.
... Sounds reasonable

Macron has said a referendum would likely be a vote to leave.

This is exactly why the EU were afraid of the UK leaving!
If France have a referendum & decide to leave, then surely Germany will have to pay more, and if they don't other countries may not be able to cover the deficit.
Each country should be free to vote on whether they leave or stay, but it does make me think that any who leave will be able to arrange trade agreements with the UK, on terms that suit us!

You're suffering from a severe case of exitomania. The only referendum france is planning is on integration environmental issues in their constitution. The petition site your article refers to is from 2005, on the EU constition. 🤣😂😆

EU is undemocratic, a referendum for all menbers states would make it clear once and for all that people are fed up with it.

Says someone from a country without a written constitution!
All EU members as well as the EU itself are based on rules in a systematic hierarchical legislation, with the national written constitution (for each EU member) and the EU treaties (at the EU level) as the supreme law, and every subordinate piece of legislation aligned with the supreme law.

The legislation also contains the rules for changing the legislation at each level. For example, changing the supreme law (national constitution and EU treaties) requires special procedures, special majorities etc.

In the UK the current government/parliament (where there is even no proper separation of powers between the government and the parliament!) can change anything they like on a whim, and they are not breaking any law.

I think there is a general lack of understanding in the UK about how the EU legislation works. For people of the EU members, it is quite easy - the EU works very similar to our national systems with a proper written constitution.

The UK government/parliament can indeed 'fudge' as they please. But in the EU, any 'fudging' can only be done within what is possible within the legal rules. The EU side simply cannot change the rules just like that, even if we wanted to. And any legislation, agreements etc. which break the existing EU law is annulled by the ECJ (whose function is similar to a national constitutional court).

The EU fear referendum. Expect further discontent with the bloc.

Don't think so. On the continent the difference between "advisory" and "binding" is known. Discontent there has always been, but obvious benefits make up for a lot of discomfort.

Right up until the moment that the discomfort outweighs supposed benefits.
The disastrous EU vaccine plan and consequent high death rate might well force a few referenda sooner than you think.

Hi

The EU will not be dismembered anytime soon.

If Countries do leave they will not do so on the same terms as we did.

They will have a Norway, still Customs Union and Single Market.

That makes economic sense and minimal disruption.
