I think we have been suffering from lots of rain and that may contribute to the ground becoming unstable. A lot of former mine working in my area can lead to collapses.

I think it's the rain too, we had one open up in the middle of the road in the village. We're an ex- mining community too.

Maybe some jobsworth forgot to notice that that new estate and linking roads were built over abandoned pits and mine shafts?

Here in Florida, in particular, norther Florida, we suffer a lot from sink holes. They are caused usually during a dry season. When water levels below ground decrease way too much. When this happens and the water level lowers, it causes dangerous underground cavities that eventually callapse bringing down whatever structure is above ground

A huge sink hole opened up here a couple of years ago which closed off the road for 12 months. It turned out to have been caused by a leaking watermai that had leached all the soil away over a long period of time. It was so close to a Pub that it had to close down and while the road was being repaired a mini housing estate was built where the pub once stood.

Yes, it's almost certainly the very wet seasons we've had lately. Here anyway, don't know about the rest of the World, The wet & that so many houses were built over mines & mine shafts.

I believe the whole of the UK is becoming a sink hole. That is why we are getting floods as the UK sinks.
Also it is the extra weight of the increase of immigrants that does not help.

It hasn't stopped raining heavily here for the past 24 hours, if something can sink and it didn't sink by now it'll never sink.
