Cataracts advice please

Opticians told me last year I have them in both eyes my left being the worse . I have seen my left eye as the optician showed me on the computer and I have what I call little spider webs almost reaching the coloured part of my eye . I am aware at times of a reflection when I look at natural light and am wondering how long I'll have to wait for surgery . Concerned that it will be left so long that I may not be able to drive or read and as I live alone I'm concerned . I'm also getting myself into a state about the surgery and dreading it even if its years away

Have any of you any advise for me please . I'm being a bit of a wimp

How long you wait depends on where you live tbh. Mrs LD thought she would have to wait along time but it was just a matter of weeks. Other areas wait for months. You can put your name down for cancellations where they could ring and ask you to go in the same afternoon. It doesn't matter if you can't make it, you don't lose your place.

The first appointment was for a consultation then they did each eye separately with a gap of about five weeks in between. Mrs LD assures me that she did not feel a thing, the only thing she didn't like was the cover they put over the face but that's because she gets a bit claustrophobic.

They put the eye to sleep during surgery and it takes a little while for it to wake up so I wouldn't suggest driving there or back.

Her eye looked almost back to normal the next day although the benefits take a little longer. You might need a new glasses prescription afterwards.

For me, I had both eyes done. Obviously at different times. That was inconvenient. But the operations themselves were quite straight forward.

Thinking about it is far worse than having any eye operation. They actually took out my eye to insert a "stent" behind it to relieve pressure then put it back. You would be surprised how many have had this done so having a cataract operation is is even more common.

Boy was I scared? I could have outdone an elephant in poo.

what they did with me is before hand gave me a walk through chat of what was going to happen.
Next was having drops in the eye to numb it . As soon as that took affect it was onto the trolley and wheel in for the op. They covered on eye and worked on the other, I knew and felt nothing.
Afterwards that eye could see but not move until the drops wore off. Sue drove me home as said it looked funny with only one eye moving.

The fear is in not knowing what to expect and happen not the op itself.

I have to have drops in the other eye 3x daily as the pressure was less and drops keep it down

I forgot to add that she had it done in Axminster Hospital (just over the border from you).

Like you have have cataracts in both eyes & my left eye is the worst, but I too am a wimp, at present they don't give me trouble apart from my vision being a bit blurred at times. I wear vari-focal specs.
Our eye infirmary are not doing tests at present even though the opticians told me to make an appointment to go.

I am dreading the time when I need the ops, even though people say they are fine & my late Mother had both hers done at aged 80, she lived til she was 93, but still I quake at the thought.
Sorry not to be positive for you & I am sure both of us will be fine when the time comes. It's the thought of the unknown.

I can understand that and I wouldn't sound so brave if it was me having it done. Mrs LD op took about 15 minutes.

Re: Cataracts advice please

Mrs Fox had both of her eyes done (at separate times) Susan, and although she is also a wimp, she couldn't believe how easy it was. An unexpected bonus was the fact that she had worn glasses from childhood for short sightedness, and after her procedure she was surprised to find that she could see without her spectacles....Go for it Susan...

Susan
It is fear of the unknown not the op itself. Mine was having a "stent" inserted behind the eye or go blind
