Re: Thai boys found safe in cave

Many children are not taught to swim .
It's not a universal custom
Half of the kids in the Carribean can't swim and they are surrounded by water In this case swimming would not be a great help anyway .
They need to dive and control their fear breathing etc which all influence diving .
I can't think how they will manage to do this .

Maybe it was a treat after football practise boys are adventurous .

They were caught out by flash flooding .
I can't think of a more terrifying prospect of getting those children to dive out.
Diving in caves is perilous in the extreme even for experts .
Diving itself iis not that easy at first the urge to take off the mask and bolt for the surface is very strong !
I remember my first dive in clear tropical water !

That's exactly what I've been wondering all along, Muddy.
What were they doing in there in the first place?

Does anybody know?

Re: Thai boys found safe in cave

The tension surrounding this whole drama is horrendous now.

Sorry if this sounds naive to the techies but just doing a bit of lateral thinking...

If we can get a man on the moon why can't modern technology make a pressurised pod for a boy to be safely inside while it's steered through the water to safety?
And then go back for the next one, and so on...

Because the tunnel is too tight in places

Its taking the Navy Seals 6 hours to get to them and they are professionals

I see...and these kids are being trained to be as adept at diving and swimming as the professionals???

It only takes a moment to panic...but 6 hours??

Re: Thai boys found safe in cave

I don't know if anyone here has had diving experience

I tried

I got on fine with the oxygen tanks and breathing but the minute I was totally submerged in water, water all around me, the feeling of claustrophobia overwhelmed me and I panicked

That was in a training pool, I was perfectly safe, it was light and bright and yet I panicked

No wonder the seals really don't want to have to swim these children out

One THAI SEAL diver has died returning from the cave.
He was resupplying the trapped lads with oxygen, the level of which are dropping, they were 21% but are now at 16% He ran out of oxygen on the return.

If it can happen to a trained Navy Diver, you can imagine the dilemma the rescuers are in.

I have done some scuba diving . Even though I had done a lot of snorkelling prior to that that feeling of panic when you first dive is frightening .The urge to shoot for the surface I see very strong .
And this was in clear tropical seas with the sun shinning through the water
I once dived in dark water and it was terrifying .
The thought of diving through a horrible dark tight passage that goes on and on would be a nightmare .
