Mental Health and Wanting to Die

I read this today and it moved me to tears. It breaks my heart to know someone would feel so low that they actually want to die. This poor girl was tormented by mental health problems and just felt like the only way to be rid of those problems was to die.

It must have been terrible for that young girls family knowing that she chose to die but she couldn't see any other way out of her torment. What a horrible life she must have felt she had. How dreadfully sad for all involved.

This is tragic.
Mental illness is still largely a mystery
Why people feel so bad that they wish to end it all -if only we knew .
So sad.

It was on radio 4 today, they followed her for a couple of weeks before she ended her life, quite harrowing

It must be so awful to hear voices. She looks in great distress in the photos.

For people with a psychiatric mental illness every day is like being in a living hell. If you go to a secure mental health facility people are regularly screaming in agony. You can escape any danger but not that of your own mind.

Re: Mental Health and Wanting to Die

The mental health situation is dreadful. As in this girls case, she was given so many different diagnoses ,how can they treat any one of them other than with drugs ? Drugs that from all accounts make them feel worse but they are still forced to take them once they are admitted.
Also the drugs that make them like cabbages and drugs that give them enormous cravings for sugar and sweet foods. They get fat and that makes them feel even worse about themselves.
I also think that constant interference by medics and psychiatrists, etc . is very stressful for some patients, they don't need the pressure.
One thing that makes me very sad is when some people accuse those who take their own lives as selfish.
How they can ever think that way is completely mystifying.

Too many sad cases these days.

Re: Mental Health and Wanting to Die

Being psychotic is not a pre-requisite for suicide.

Tens of thousands of people chose to end their lives for a wide variety of reasons.

Some because of a traumatic event, or a series of traumatic events that last for years, seemingly never to end.

Such people are NOT crazy in the usual sense of the word. They are merely horribly depressed.

Though women occasionally commit suicide, it is men who most often succeed in carrying the deed out.

For men, the most common cause is the loss of a wife/GF/lover. For men, being single/divorced/separated/abandoned is vastly more difficult than it is for a woman.

For women the opposite is true. She is "safest" if she is single.

Keep an eye out on the nightly news. When you hear about a man who killed his EX, take note of his relationship status. All too often it is because he can't cope with having his lover leave him. I do not hint or suggest that he has any right to do this. I merely state that it is a common cause.

Some people, male and female are plagued with memories of an abusive childhood. Some go on to live near normal lives. But, for some, the trauma is never ending.

Add a stressful existence, throw in a lost lover, failing health, and you can have a recipe for disaster.

In the study of psychology, there is something called "The Rule of Thirds". That refers to the results of psychotherapy. 1/3 will improve, 1/3 will remain the same and 1/3 will get worse.
