Re: Hands Up...Who Dries Stuff On Their Radiators?

So why is it considered unhealthy to dry using radiators?

When you hang wet clothes on a radiator or clothes horse to dry, the water evaporates out of the fabric, where it turns into moisture in the air. Too much moisture in the air leads to condensation, which can form on walls, windows, mirrors or any other surfaces which the damp air comes into contact with.

Modern homes are often highly susceptible to condensation, as improved insulation, draught-proofing and double-glazing mean that, while they retain heat better, air ventilation is poor. This leads to stale air and trapped moisture, which can be both unpleasant and unhealthy. The additional moisture in the air from drying your clothes inside can lead to damp conditions in your home, which could in turn lead to mould growth.

Black mould can cause health problems, particularly of a respiratory nature, as it releases spores into the air which are then breathed in. It can also cause damage to your home, starting with staining paint and wallpaper, which may start to blister or peel.

My Mother's crazy Aunt, used to hang her big bloomers on coat hangers in the window!
My Mother had a fit when she saw them hanging up at our house, when she came to stay. I was a child, and I could not stop laughing.

IMO, you'd have to be drying a lot of washing on radiators, e.g. for a large family, to cause problems .....

In the winter, the cold air that seeps into your home from the outside has a lower humidity - meaning that it carries very little moisture. You crank up the heat inside your house, which adds warmth but doesn't increase the amount of moisture in the air.

So, some clothes drying may do some good .....

Usually, knickers, false eyelashes and drying stamps (mainly years ago!)

Do you use your radiators to dry anything or do you use a drier of some sort?
Never! Apart from the fact that I don't have any radiators - if I put washing on the line at 9am it is dry before midday (unless its raining).

In fact you reminded me I have got to get it in...

Re: Hands Up...Who Dries Stuff On Their Radiators?

I live in a dip surrounded by trees. Depending on the season, humidity or dampness seems to hang in the air.

In summer when it's warm and sunny, or warm and windy, it's fine for line drying. Love those days.

Winter time or rainy days - it's central heating on and clothes on the rads.
Windows wide open, sometimes dehumidifier on the go too.
