Re: Roger Scrutton Sacked for Non-PC Comments

Today's Mail on Sunday and yesterday's Mail have covered this disgusting Left-wing stich-up but this is a considered response from the excellent Douglas Murray (another that has been absent from the airwaves since his book on immigration).

Reluctant readers might want to skip the first half:

Scruton is a very clever man, and has written some excellent books on philosophy (30+ I believe).

But after he was caught taking backhanders on the sly from the tobacco industry, it pretty much wrecked his reputation.

Just another lovable eccentric English rogue, really.

It wasn't on the sly. And I doubt it's because of tobacco that the Left are trying to destroy him.

Yes, it was very much on the sly.

Scruton was offering to place pro right-to-smoke articles in selected publications which would be read by people who would assume, not unreasonably, that the well-argued piece was written as a disinterested philosophical defence of 'aving a fag.

But when e-mails came to light revealing that he had approached the tobacco companies offering to place the pieces in the press - and for a lot of dosh - he was caught red-handed. How people laughed.

I repeat: a clever man, but basically just another Tory hypocrite on the make.

And "the left" (whatever that over-used term means) are not "trying to destroy him". Scruton (like David Starkey, another "Tory controversialist") has always deliberately courted publicity for himself. In many ways, he is his own worst enemy. He will no doubt see the current criticisms of him as confirming the "rightness" of his archaic "Tory values".

It's all well-documented on the internet.

Brush-up on your research skills and check it, Todger.

Then go toddle-off fox-hunting with Scruton and his anachronistic chums.

There's a great deal of data and information available from the 'Net but very little that is 100% reliable.

However data and information are both inputs to establishing facts.

Establishing facts is seldom purely objective, or to put in Scouse, "it's the way you tell 'em".

Blood sport? A classic oxymoron. Certainly in my opinion.

Roger should be given his job back. But of course he won't.

As for the Left-wing rag in question its reputation (for what it is) can never have been lower.

You should see some of the stuck-up, toffee-nosed "rags" Scruton has written for - read by idiots who still think there is (or should be) a British Empire, and that they - and not the likes of you or I - should be running it!
