LOL! That was a John Major thing when the ERM went tits up! If it's true or apocryphal is anyone's guess but I'd believe it of him.

The devastation hasn't even started.

Keep in mind that the Black Death changed Europe and especially England beyond recognition because of the effect it had on the economy of the country. It destroyed serfdom due to the moving of so many survivors from agriculture to city dwelling which in turn changed the entire agricultural sector and so how landowners had to reinvent their own way of life. Suddenly being lord of the manor wasn't so great when the bound labours did a runner.

On a more recent example Spanish 'flu was the root cause of the First World War ending and the lead in to what eventually became the Great Depression.

What this horrible monster will result in goodness knows but it's not going to be a return to anything like what went for normal before it kicked in.

Ex-Journalist Allegra Stratton to lead No 10 TV briefings

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-54468229

Former journalist Allegra Stratton will lead No 10's new daily televised press briefings, BBC sources understand. Stratton - who has worked for both ITV and the BBC - will become the government's new press secretary.

The daily updates, similar to the format used by the White House in the United States, are expected to start next month.

Currently, political journalists are able to question the prime minister's official spokesperson - who is a civil servant - off camera every day.

These briefings are on the record, meaning they can be quoted and attributed to the spokesperson, who is never named. Under the changes, the briefings will be on camera.

Stratton's role, however, is a political appointment by the Conservative Party.
