Hippo Cull

I have just seen in today's paper that the Zambian government have announced they want 2,000 Hippo's culled.

That is going to bring in a few bob if they sell this extensive cull off to the idle rich trophy hunters, even though we have lost 40% of our wildlife since 1970.

Chris Packham said it all when he said - " There is no doubt at all that in the majority of instances, trophy hunting is large sums of money going into a small number of pockets.

Someone is going to pay money to extinguish the lif3e of an animal which most other people are trying to keep alive.

How can you ask kids to raise money for conservation if they then learn that if you've got enough money you can go and kill an endangered animal?

Pleasure at deaths is just beyond me."

Well said Chris. Good man.

Re: Hippo Cull

Did they give any reasons for the cull Mups?
I have never heard of Hippo culls before, and they are not
usually included in the trophy hunters itinerary!
If its a government cull, it is normally only carried out if
the animals have become to overcrowded for their environment
or if there is disease amongst them, these culls are supposed
to be strictly controlled by the government involved!
I dont think trophy hunters will be carrying out the cull due
to the number of animals being culled being quite high!
Maybe the rivers are low this year due to drought or some
other factor, so they reduce animal numbers so that the
remaining animals can survive till next year!
However it is very disturbing this is happening and l think
WWF should be notified so they can make sure all is
above board!

Best Regards Donkeyman!

Hi Donkeyman,
This is the link I read in the paper. Have a read and it will explain more than I have, then you can make your decision.

https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-...rophy-16163202

'Born Free' has also written about it:

https://www.bornfree.org.uk/zambia-hippo-cull

No matter what the reason for this, whether it be for health, water, over breeding . . . what ever, for the idle rich to be willing to pay for the 'pleasure' of it, is totally disgusting and immoral.

Re: Hippo Cull

Thanks for the links Mups! What is going on is definately
irregular! It looks like the usual story of official corruption
in collusion with private hunting interests!
It looks like the conservation charities are allready involved
and hopefully can get an intervention! But it does not
auger well for wild life at all!
I intend to write to the president, as suggested on one of
the links you supplied, perhaps we should all do this?
You never know it might influence him, they do tend to worry
about their image!
I despair ot the human race!

Re: Hippo Cull

The cull was due to start this month but as it is supposedly to take place over a five year period , it might be possible to stop it by signing the petition and making a comment.

Re: Hippo Cull

There are too many humans in this world, so maybe we should consider culling them!
After all it us humans that upset the balance of nature.

Isn't it time that humans stopped the practices they think will make life better & let nature do it naturally? If we changed our attitude of thinking humans are the most important life, just think how many disasters could be avoided.

I sometimes wonder if we are heading for an age where many lives, including humans, will cease. That way only the fittest will survive & realize that our greed almost destroyed the planet... so maybe let nature make decisions in who should live or die!

Re: Hippo Cull

Actually Twink that is so true...I know saying this might sound controversial but maybe its time we added contraceptives to the water supply in some areas of the world. Sounds like a Stephen King novel doesn't it...but drastic measures will be needed soon.
