Rules and regulations – too much?

We are bound by rules for this and regulations for that. Is this getting too much, are we trying to take all the risk out of everything?

“Women’s Institute members have been banned from baking cakes for ill hospice patients in Leicester, due to health and safety rules.”

https://www.itv.com/news/central/201...sick-patients/

Most of the rules and regulations appear to be Health & Safety based. There was none of this in the past so are we a better society as a result or is it just getting far too much, what you you think about this?

Like 'Political Correctness' things have gone too far. Perhaps there was need for 'Health and Safety' at one time in some situations - but it has run mad.

The explosion of litigation and huge costs of insurance is responsible for a great deal of rigid compliance with H&S requirements.

Yes that's true Todger. Was a time when everyone was responsible for their own health and safety, but that was when there was no money in it.....

Now it's 'Where there's blame, there's a claim' ..... And if you can relinquish your responsibility onto others, it takes the pressure off you, and there might be few bob in it also...

By the way Todger, your avatar looks so intimidating....

it is done to generate work for people who arn't good at anything else. As long as they can think up new ideas then they stay in employment

Re: Rules and regulations – too much?

There does seem to be an excess of health and safety
rules and regulations at the moment, l think we now run the
risk of having contradictory regs in which one cancels out
the other! What happens in a dispute?
We then need to use tricky lawyers to sort out the problem,
Which was imo probably caused by the same tricky lawyers
having a hand in the writing of those regulations in the first
place! Also l believe that companies also write specifications
for products in an ambiguous manner, also with the help of
the said lawyers in order to avoid any problems if their
products go wrong?

Rules & regs, health & safety is always driven by money somewhere along the line. No one gives a stuff about your health, just the income it creates. We know this because all the serious stuff is overlooked.

Re: Rules and regulations – too much?

Since I began working at a big local Hospice in the Day Care unit in 2001 these are the popular activities that have since been axed over the years:

Regular outings for fish'n'chips lunch...reason, too risky, need personal risk assessment in advance for everyone, plus written permission/ disclaimer from the cafe owner

Regular outings for cream tea at big local garden centre...reasons, see above

Flower arrangement demonstrations, with participation...reason, too risky, might cut themselves or prick a finger on a thorn

Cooking pancakes on Shrove Tuesday...reason, might get burnt

Table with second hand items for sale or exchange...reason, might be harbouring germs

Second hand books shelf...reason, might be harbouring germs

Bringing in cakes for birthdays and other special occasions...reason, all food must be professionally prewrapped

The Red Cross manicure volunteer is no longer permitted to cut or file or varnish nails...reason, someone might be allergic and tools aren't sterile

The volunteer Aromatherapist is no longer permitted to use Sweet Almond base oil...reason, someone might have a nut allergy

And so it continues.

To be honest it's heartbreaking.
And as one patient once said to me, "For God's sakes we're dying anyway!!
I love these folk for their humour!
