I go through this every year in my house with my 2 cats. We have a lighted tree, but we can't hang ornaments on it or put up too many sparkly decorations because that's just an invitation for this...

My DIL has two cats and they wreak havoc on the tree if they get into the sitting room .

Ooooo, nice. See, that's what I wish I had, a room that I can close off from the cats. An Aunt of mine had a nice sitting room. She also had a houseful of cats. But only one cat was allowed in there... her old cat, Prissy. She never bothered the Christmas decorations. She was content lying in her little bed by the fire, so she had special privileges. The rest of the cats, however, got the run of the house. Just not in that room.

A friend of ours had a Christmas tree and two kittens. The kittens survived, the Christmas tree didn't.
