US election 2020: Guide to the Trump v Biden presidential debates

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/election-us-2020-54003441

We've had months of set-piece events, tightly controlled by a team of campaign staff. Well, that's about to end.

On the debate stage, candidates are on their own and in the whole campaign, this is the moment most fraught with risk.

Plenty can go wrong, so hold on tight.

Here's your handy guide.

When - and where - are the Trump v Biden debates?

There are three presidential debates on the agenda:
  • 29 September in Cleveland, Ohio
  • 15 October in Miami, Florida
  • 22 October in Nashville, Tennessee
Vice-President Mike Pence and Senator Kamala Harris will also go head-to-head:
  • 7 October in Salt Lake City, Utah

They all take place from 21:00-22:30ET (02:00-03:30GMT), with no commercial interruptions.

What's the format for the first debate?

Six questions in six segments, 15 minutes each. The segments are:
  • Trump and Biden's records
  • Supreme Court
  • Coronavirus pandemic
  • Race protests and violence in cities
  • Election integrity
  • Economy

Mr Trump and Mr Biden will get two minutes apiece to respond to the question initially before the back-and-forth begins.
I find such "debates" excruciatingly tedious, so I'll just wait for the "reviews" .....

I have have no doubt, though, that some will find the "performances" riveting .....

Going into the debate, who's ahead in national polls?

DEMOCRAT BIDEN 50%

REPUBLICAN TRUMP 43%

The candidates will do away with the customary handshake when they meet on stage due to the pandemic. An elbow tap was considered, but both campaigns said it would be too awkward, according to Politico.

Trump, Biden and debate moderator Chris Wallace will not be required to wear masks once they take the stage. However, there is a chance that Biden - who has curtailed campaign travel due to the pandemic - may emerge wearing a mask as a visual comparison to Trump, who has downplayed the virus' danger.

Two universities - in Indiana and Michigan - cancelled their plans to host debates over virus concerns.

The audience at the new host - an Ohio university - has been limited to about 70 people who will be tested for Covid-19 beforehand and must wear masks. Typical in-person debate audiences usually reach around 900 people, according to the Commission on Presidential Debates.

Also gone is the normally crowded “spin room”, where campaign representatives give break-out news conferences to scrums of journalists where they make their case for why their candidate won the debate.
The sparse, controlled setting may not suit "rabble-rouser" Trump .....

Biden and Harris release tax returns before debate

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/election-...eporting-story

US Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden has released his tax returns just hours ahead of the first debate with President Donald Trump.

Mr Biden and his wife Jill paid nearly $288,000 (£224,000) in income tax last year, according to the filings.

Mr Biden's tax returns showed he paid $346,000 in federal taxes and other payments last year on an income of nearly $985,000 before seeking a refund of nearly $47,000 they said they had overpaid.

Mr Biden's running mate Kamala Harris and her husband Doug Emhoff reported $3,018,127 in taxable income, most of this was from Mr Emhoff's partnership at a law firm. The pair paid $1,185,628 in taxes.
Will transparency help Biden .....

Round 1

No clear winner

Trump deployed his preferred bully-boy tactics but Biden held firm.

No voters will be swayed

Donald Trump plunges debate into chaos as he repeatedly talks over Joe Biden

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...sidential-news
The first presidential debate between Donald Trump and Joe Biden deteriorated into an ugly display of contempt on Tuesday night, as the president relentlessly interrupted and attacked his Democratic rival during clashes over the coronavirus pandemic, race, the economy and the future of the supreme court.

Over the course of an extraordinarily combative and chaotic 90-minute performance, a fitting coda to what has been one of the nastiest presidential campaigns in recent memory, Trump interjected so frequently that Biden at one point lost his patience and snapped: “Will you shut up, man? This is so unpresidential.”

Dominating the conversation appeared to be Trump’s central strategy, but he did on occasion return to the themes he has pressed on the campaign trail.

When Biden accused him of being the “worst president America has ever had”, Trump shot back that he had done “more in 47 months than you’ve done in 47 years”, an indictment of the former vice-president’s long career in Washington.

But even as Trump attempted to pin Biden, he trampled his own message with a stunning refusal to condemn white nationalism and commit to a peaceful transition of power.
Naturally, Trump supporters will have appreciated his "redneck loudmouth" style .....
