Toshiba Satellite touch pad

Hi,

Every time I turn on my laptop, I find that the touch pad is operating even though I have turned it off the previous day.

Using either fn 9 and fn 5, as advised in the instructions, has no effect whatsoever, and I can find no means of contacting Toshiba for advice.

The only way I can disable it is to go to 'Mouse Properties', select 'Synaptics Click Pad' and close the box. Strangely, no option appears to turn it on or off, but the problem then ceases!

Unfortunately, the thing reactivates itself the next time I start the laptop.

I can find no other means of stopping it. All I can think of is to cut a piece of polystyrene to size and attach it over the touch pad!

I'd be grateful if anyone has any better ideas.

EDIT: An explanation: I now see that Toshiba no longer produce laptops for the domestic market, so I'm sure they won't be offering any help or advice!

You could try the 'Device Manager' way described in the article linked to below. I think it should apply to all models..

A couple of other ways are mentioned too. Device Manager seems the easiest.

Thanks for your help.

I opted for the Device Manager procedure and found there was no option to 'disable' the touch pad, only to uninstall it. I chose that.

Unbelievably, it decided to enable Windows Update, which I had disabled. 15 minutes later and two re-starts and I had my computer back. Unfortunately, the touch pad drivers had not been uninstalled.

I think I'll leave it alone for now. At least the touch pad now seems to be disabled.

I will never buy Toshiba products again. I had a great Toshiba laptop that literally fell apart after four years. It's possible the same is happening to your hardware. With my laptop bits of plastic started just breaking on the air vent and screws started falling out. Part of the hinge mechanism has come loose too. There's nothing wrong with the actual function but the casing is rubbish.

That's terrible.

Fortunately, mine is operating very well at the moment, except for the minor glitch I mentioned above.

Nevertheless, I too will never buy a Toshiba laptop again.

(They don't make them any more!)
