Hi Susan,

The first thing to do is change her password - Now!

A good, strong, password is the first action.

If she was using just one password, to log in to Windows, various apps, emails, etc. it would be safer to have a different password for each one.

After all, if he has her email address and log in password, he could log in, take over the PC, and run the account as if it was his own.

Without her knowing.

Not too easy, but it does get done.

Next, I'd get a new email address.
The scammer has the current one, and will use it again.
The current one is a dead duck!

Keep a close eye on purchases, such as on eBay, and any purchases on line, etc. A couple of years ago I spotted some eBay purchase, on my account, with deliver addresses in Russia.

Luckily, eBay sorted that quickly and, also luckily, my eBay account was not linked to Paypal!

Most of the above probably will not happen.

But, it's better safe than sorry.

One other aspect of this PWND activity is that we have to think about what information was in the user profile which was sold on, or given away, and which led to the PWND site finding that the breach had happened.

For example, if it was a copy of a personal web profile which you used to use to buy stuff, the "sold on" profile might well include Bank Details, home addresses, log on info, etc.

Worrying, but a fact of life on the web.

Finally, running your antivirus scan, is a must, plus the free Malwarebytes app. This particular email, probably, was not virus related but something might have been sent.

Just to add . I have an Amazon UK account . I dont purchase a lot but realised I was leaving my debit card info in my account at Amazon. So now I delete the card after I've made a purchase .

Susan,

I would say that you are thinking the right way.

Some will argue that doing this is a bit over the top.

But better safe than sorry.

You did the right thing, Summer.

Just keep your eye on things, i.e. watch for suspicious activity.

As said, earlier, when they PWN your emails, you can never be sure what they actually got their hands on.

For example, if you used an online account, to buy all your clothes, the dealer/online shop might keep your banking, card details, etc, on the system.

If that dealer goes bust, or an unhappy employee decides to make a few Bob by selling on those details you can imagine where that might end up.

Why would any perp buy that king of data?

Because money will be made that way.

Changing your passwords is right.

Keeping the amount of data any company can store about you is also sound thinking.

P.S. I bet you get another email in a year or so.

Re: The Porn Scammer Tries Again!

I have only ever had one dodgy looking email after using one of those online breakers yard sites. After changing my details, I decided to look into it a bit deeper and I traced the email back to a mosque in east London.

Re: The Porn Scammer Tries Again!

I've had a couple of recent ones that were supposedly from Apple thanking me for purchases made on iTunes. Then they nicely gave me a link so I could log in just in case there was an issue or if I hadn't bought anything.

No personal info was included, account numbers, passwords, CC numbers, etc. The fishing was hoping that you would click the included link and take you to a fake website where you would log in and THEN they would have your info.

Anyway, the CC I used for previous iTunes purchases have been closed (did it months ago when I was cleaning up finances when the wife passed) and no new ones have been added to the account so there was no need to pursue the matter any further than delete...delete...delete...

Ah! The "Link", the "attachment", the "Trojan Horse".

Did you call Apple Support to ask if they were aware of it?
