Orangutan I'm sure you wouldn't be considered an extra people generally won't ask unless it's genuinely meant these days, but I think they will respect your wish to stay independent.

I have great respect for those who are strong enough to go against the flow.
I'm sure you're right. It's ME who considers myself an extra in that situation. It's just not for me.

And yes, I am rather antisocial...No strength required!

I'm definitely anti-social and would go to almost any lengths to avoid parties etc. I do make an exception for family though - I love to socialise with my family - especially the grandkids!

Just because they may not believe doesn't mean they are going to ruin other family members celebrations. There may well be children or even grand children who do believe .

I would hate to think that my children were deprived of Christmas or my Grandchildren, that is about the worst thing to rip a family apart.
Ones own personal beliefs should not influence others, everyone has to make up their own mind

It is a winter holiday season, when you have the food, the presents and the razzmatazz. Whether it started with Christianity is neither here nor there for many people in the present day.

This exactly... But the OP inferred that people who do not subscribe to Christianity had no business celibrating Christmas, or at least why so they. So it's been pointed out that Christmas is not the original hoilday.. it was just an add on. Just about every major faith has laid claim to that part of the year. It's call the Holiday Season for a reason..

Oh I know A, I've been keeping up with the thread.

My last post was in reference to the post before regarding not spoiling Christmas for others in the family because you are not religious.

Re: What I don't understand (Christmas celebrations)

Isn't Christmas just a Christian rip off of Saturnalia? A Roman celebration of the god Saturn and the coming of the new year.

I am sure I read somewhere that Saturnalia involved public banqueting, drinking and gift giving (sound familiar?).

I'll drink to that... Cheers Saturn; your shout.
