Move or Stay

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-12640636

What do you think?

I would prefer St Georges day or Trafalgar day as to May day I think that they relate more to this country and it's history.

To me May day is related to Labour and Russia even though it was originally a day for celebrating the arrival of spring and new growth.

I do think, as I always have, that we have to many holidays in this country. If people did not get paid for being on holiday then there would be more production and a better outlook for the country.

Re: Move or Stay

Morning Antibrown.
I can't see the need to change May 1st to October or another month - It is nice to have a Bank Holiday when there is a chance that the weather will be reasonable.
As you know 1st May BH is known as Labour Day and I see nothing wrong with this, but if they want to change the name then I suppose this is OK - but I really don't see why it is necessary.
I don't think there are too many holidays - in fact I am all for having another Bank Holiday. So I would say keep 1st May as a a BH (Labour Day) and give everyone another BH for St.George's Day or Trafalgar Day.
By the way, both those days have rather warlike connotations do you not think - not the best of associations for a BH in my opinion.

But we have Whitsum(O sorry Spring Holiday) a couple of weeks later and Easter a couple of weeks earlier.

Good idea to change to Autumn when the weather is much more settled

You could be right - but October has been suggested Galty and I think that would be a bit late. If it was an extra day that would be fine by me whatever time of year it was, but the first Monday in May is a nice date, I think, so I would vote to keep it.

Aerolor, if it was an extra day would you expect it to be a paid one?

Of course, but it doesn't matter to me anymore as I am retired and every day is a holiday. Even if there was an extra day BH Antibrown I dont think it would be as much holiday as politicians get.

I started the same thread on Dogsey today also (Great minds think alike )

I believe the idea was principaly to 'even out' the spread of Bank Holidays which are too scewed to the start of the year.

As Claire quickly pointed out May Day was originally the time to welcome Spring and was hijacked by the socialist / communist fraternity

Yes, we do have too many holidays in the UK, and in many countries getting paid for being on holiday is unheard of

Re: Move or Stay

Bank Holidays can be really hard on small businesses, even if it is unpaid. I don't recall May Day being a Bank Holiday for very long, was it brought in to celebrate one of the Queen's Jubilees or similar? Whatever the reason it was initiated by people who have probably never run a small business, and cannot comprehend the effect that it can have, not just the initial cost but also the loss of production time. There are too many holidays now, particularly in Spring, and haven't small business just been awarded another holiday "gift" for the royal wedding. How ridiculous, as though the country isn`t in enough of a financial mess, some bright spark comes up with this. Shame on them. Bah humbug.....

Re: Move or Stay

Most of the bank holidays fall in the five months between late December and the end of May. Between August bank holiday and Christmas there is a long gap so for me an Autumn Bank Hol would seem to make sense and Trafalgar day would do fine.

There again as I am retired it does not really bother me but those still working might like an Autumn break?
