It just strikes me as sad, music and lyrics .....

Hi Pats! yes, it does make one sad, i stll get teary-eyed when hearing this line, but at the same time, it sort of gives me an uplift, so to speak. To think positive about life, it is still worthwhile afterall, and try to enjoy each day.

I know its a strange effect !
I recall singing it in a pub, telling everyone to smile thru' and there was I in tears

I think the lyric doesn't match the music in that song.........a mournful tune but a cheerful lyric.
