Re: If You Were Referred to as "Lad"

Nowt wrong with calling or being called a `lad`, well at least not up here in Yorkshire. A greeting in the 60's when passing another bloke was "A'lad" accompanied by a nod of the head. This has died out along with many other local expressions as the country becomes homogenised.

More one for the males, but the females may well have a view.

Whether it be 'lad' for the gents, or 'lass' for the ladies, I certainly cannot see any reason to take offence.
Too much p.c. stuff about as it is, without objecting to a friendly word like that.

Re: If You Were Referred to as "Lad"

Never have that problem here; it is either your first name if they know it or "mate" if they don't.

Used to also be "Cobber" back in the 60s but you rarely hear the expression these days except very occasionally by people my age or older.

One of the things it took me ages to get used to when I first came here 50 years ago was calling your boss by his first name. If you called them "Sir" or "Mr" soso they would usually say something to stop you.

Were lads calling men in their sixties that they didn't know "lad"?

Indeed I'm younger than many where I work I always say hello ladies anything for the dishwasher as I pass them, hello gentlemen to the men, whether they are younger or older than me all get the same treatment. Tbh they are very pleased I take their cups to the kitchen for them too busy to worry what I call them.

Gravitas, maybe it depends where you originate from, but in the north most people would consider being called "lad" a friendly way to address somebody, if you don't know their name.
When a taxi driver says it, I would think it is a term he uses to most men... not sure what he would call you if he was being unpleasant, but I wouldn't think it would be lad?

And why would you think that? I thought you were interested in ladies ideas on this topic.

Re: If You Were Referred to as "Lad"

It`s not a term I would expect to get in these parts. When I lived in Yorkshire-yes. And I do refer to myself as a Bedfordshire lad.

In Hull it's 'bud', 'pal' or usually just "alright mate?".
