The rules apparently allow for us to send anyone without a job (or the means to support themselves) home after three months and there's absolutely no EU obligation to give them benefits. As the caller said, we cannot keep track of people because we don't have ID cards, but other countries do and implement the rules. You don't see that splashed across the papers.
There are currently absolutely masses of people coming here from all over the world. Many will disappear because there is very little control. That's not going to change any time soon. What we might see is a knee jerk reaction to pick on those who have all the papers, but the systems simply aren't there to police those who don't want to stay visible. They can easily pretend to be someone else.
Hi
A very good post, just about sums it up.
In 1998 Tony Blair abolished leaving checks, so anyone could overstay their visa, this may not sound important, but it is crucial to allowing the vast number of illegals we have here in the UK.
We are unique in this respect.
In 2004 the EU was greatly enlarged with the Eastern European Countries.
There was a fear of mass migration, so the EU allowed restrictions on movement from Countries like Poland un til 2011.
Countries like Germany and France put on severe restrictions, numbers and access restricted to certain sectors with a skills shortage.
Austria and Germany: Restriction on free movement and to provide certain services. Work permits still needed for all countries. In Austria, to be employed the worker needs to have been employed for more than a year in his home country prior to accession. Germany had bilateral quotas which remained in force.
France: Five years of restrictions depending on sector and region. Students, researchers, self-employed and service providers were exempt from the restrictions.
Guess who did not apply any restrictions?
The UK of course.
The constant blaming of the EU for our problems is annoying, there are reasons for leaving, but we cannot blame them for our own stupidity.
