Re: Passport Queues in Europe

Hi

They have had ample time to prepare for this, but have not.

Some EU Countries have coped well, some have not, Schiphol has had major problems.

It is not just a matter of putting more staff on, firstly you have to have the staff to do so and secondly, you need more booths installed, which often involves changes to the structure of the airports.

No point in tighter security controls, Anyone can be just outside the 3 mile limit and fly a drone with drugs right into the country.

Hi

This is not about drugs, it is about people, vetting who comes into Countries.

We will be doing exactly the same to control immigration to the UK.

Hi

We are not in the Schengen Area, the new controls apply to all Countries not in Schengen.

Now every passenger’s passport is electronically compared against the “Schengen Information System”, a big pan-European database – and also against Interpol’s list of stolen and lost travel documents.

It is something the UK has been wanting for years, even though we do not do it ourselves.

The UK has the most lax Border Controls of all.

It is not that long ago we were waving people through unchecked at times of high volume.

There has been nothing to stop us implementing checks at the border. We didn't sign up to schengen. As someone on the radio said today, the media has conned Brits into believing mass immigration is the fault of the EU. We haven't implemented EU rules to free movement. The rules apparently allow for us to send anyone without a job (or the means to support themselves) home after three months and there's absolutely no EU obligation to give them benefits. As the caller said, we cannot keep track of people because we don't have ID cards, but other countries do and implement the rules. You don't see that splashed across the papers.

There are currently absolutely masses of people coming here from all over the world. Many will disappear because there is very little control. That's not going to change any time soon. What we might see is a knee jerk reaction to pick on those who have all the papers, but the systems simply aren't there to police those who don't want to stay visible. They can easily pretend to be someone else.

Hi

A very good post, just about sums it up.

In 1998 Tony Blair abolished leaving checks, so anyone could overstay their visa, this may not sound important, but it is crucial to allowing the vast number of illegals we have here in the UK.

We are unique in this respect.

In 2004 the EU was greatly enlarged with the Eastern European Countries.

There was a fear of mass migration, so the EU allowed restrictions on movement from Countries like Poland un til 2011.

Countries like Germany and France put on severe restrictions, numbers and access restricted to certain sectors with a skills shortage.

Austria and Germany: Restriction on free movement and to provide certain services. Work permits still needed for all countries. In Austria, to be employed the worker needs to have been employed for more than a year in his home country prior to accession. Germany had bilateral quotas which remained in force.

France: Five years of restrictions depending on sector and region. Students, researchers, self-employed and service providers were exempt from the restrictions.

Guess who did not apply any restrictions?

The UK of course.

The constant blaming of the EU for our problems is annoying, there are reasons for leaving, but we cannot blame them for our own stupidity.

Re: Passport Queues in Europe

Thank you both for these informative posts .

Re ID cards haven't carried them all of my life in the various countries I have lived I see no reason why we should not have them here.

This is not a 'new' thing. In 1965 I travelled to France via Newhaven-Dieppe ferry. No sign of a Customs/Passport Officer prior to boarding ferry, at t'other end in Dieppe was able to disembark, and board Paris bound train again without sight of any customs or passport Officers. Two weeks later on return, same again, no sight of customs or passport officers.
