Re: Birds

all wonderful pictures and some very professional photos!!

This might be a bit of a blog but thought I would post a photographic tale of 'our' Kookaburra family. Hope its ok.

It started when we saw the Kooka's attacking the Gum tree at the bottom of the yard. A pair were taking it in turn to dig in to an old lopped branch to make a nest.

Then they started using the clothes line as a vantage point for foraging

they had no fear at all and we had some mince (found out later this was not good for them) so one thing...

led to another...

and another...

???

The nest was in the tree to the right, it must have been convenient to come for a feed ( was now chicken breast, pet food? )

Left the balcony door open by mistake, in hindsight I could have just left the fridge door open, self service?

Lots of activity at the nest

this was a bit of a shock (Tiger snake, all Tasmanian snakes are poisonous )
[/IMG]

The first chick had arrived, and then its first flight, all very comical!

I read up a bit and found that they form a family group and that if conditions are good they expand their territory, pairing off to new nests.

Then for some reason unknown they abandoned the nest and were gone. There is still one pair that come back to inspect the nest? but havnt stayed.

Re: Birds

Today a friend took me up the coast to see an North American wader that should have been on its way to its South American wintering grounds from its Arctic breeding grounds. Tiny and distant it favoured hanging out with the Lapwings, a digiscpoed record shot was all i could manage.

Re: Birds

I hope you can see them... ospreys with their nest at the pond. I never saw a osprey in Michigan before....many in Florida but not up here. In Florida they nest in March, would this be a summer nesting?
