Re: Why Are Mongrels So Expensive?

I had this discussion just this morning. I'll repeat what I said then here.

I understand why the poodle crosses were made. It was because people wanted the attributes of Goldies, Labs and Spaniels but without the moulting which set some people's allergies off. Crossing with a poodle stops (or lessens) the moulting.

These crosses were successful but it's now got out of hand and has turned into one massive cash cow.

Lots of other crosses were made and given the label "Designer Dog" along with the inflated price label to go with it.

They are all Heinz 57s yet stupid people pay silly prices for a stupid name.

As for rescues......I can only speak for what's on offer in this area, and unfortunately the rescues here are rescues for a reason, usually that reason is behavioural issues/nastiness/aggression, all those things you really don't want. I would never get a rescue dog from round here.

Art, my friend has a poodle. He's about 5 now. She got him from a woman who breeds and shows poodles. He was 18 months old and had grown to be half an inch too tall for the class he was to be shown in, (he's a toy I think). He had spent most of that 18 months in a cage, and he has behavioural issues due to that. Nothing really bad but he's clingy and fearful, which is a shame.

She has him clipped once every 5 weeks and it costs her £25. For that he gets bathed, clipped, nails clipped, teeth cleaned.

This is him, his name is Michael...

That's a good price we have a groomer lovely chap but we pay £45 each time I decided we could clip nails ourselves at £8 a paw. We've always done Elsie and Betty's ourselves so we're happy to at least try it.

Re: Why Are Mongrels So Expensive?

I have just done a bit of research on the Pets for home site.

Boxer puppy = £1,600
Bulldog =£2,000
English Bull Terrier £1,800
Schnauzer £900

Murtagh was sort of in the middle at £1,200. Of course all dogs have undergone a certain amount of cross breeding otherwise they would all look the same.

realspeed, A few weeks ago, I rang my vets and they suggested that l look on the KC site. By coincidence one of their retired vets had puppies for sale advertised on the site. I emailed him but they were all sold.

I'd definitely have another bichon, I keep saying I wish we had two but John doesn't want two so I didn't go on about it.
LQ, l see that Pudsey and Sully on Britain’s Got Talent, were a mixture, Bichon, Border collie and Chinese Crested powder puff cross.

I would get a rescue dog every time, most are very loving & want to please after being rejected. We have had two, first one a Spaniel type, the second a Border Collie type, both cross bred & very loving. I am too old to get a dog now though.
Rescue kennels usually make sure a dog is suitable for the home it's going to, if they are any good that is.
Tiffany, l know that Rescue kennel people are very strict but l suppose they have to be.

You can usually tell if there's dingo because they are very aloof and hard to socialise. The breed we had got the intelligence and boundless energy from the cattle and the gentleness of the lab. That was our last dog and he was a total gem. Our current little guy is a similar mix although he has staffy and Huntaway as well. They were both rescue dogs and both cost us under $500 with all shots, desexing and other stuff squared away. The other side of the coin is that pet ownership rules are pretty strict here. No knowledge of those in UK.
Keezoy, lt sounds like you have also been lucky getting a rescue dog that have been gems.

In the past, l have got all my dogs as puppies from breeders and they have been fine. Although, there are lots of dogs advertised Online for sale. I am very wary.
I might be wrong but I feel sure, some sell them on behalf of puppy farms.

While folks keep paying these silly prices for crosses, others will keep breeding them.

I wouldn't be put off a rescue just because of what happened years ago.
You haven't got small children now - unless you have got very young grand children at home, have you? But reputable rescues should help you sort this anyway.
In fact, many reputable ones won't even let a dog go to a home with small children in the first place.

Have a browse through this link, see if it gives you any ideas.

Failing that, have a look at Dogs Trust below:

https://www.dogstrust.org.uk/our-centres/

I couldn't help you search because I don't know which area you are to put in the search box, so you'll have to do that and find the nearest centre to you.

Good luck, and let us know how you get on.
Mups, Thank You for the links. l don’t know if l could take the chance on another rescue dog.
I have young grandchildren and their mother isn’t keen on dogs!

Your choice of course, but even a bought in non-rescue dog could grow up not liking children, and if their own Mum doesn't even like dogs, she is hardly likely to teach them how to behave around them, and be gentle and respect them is she, do you think?

Apart from that, are you buying a dog for yourself, to enjoy and be a companion for you, or one the family must approve of?

Do any family still live with you Art, because then I could understand your concern about their approval more.
Sorry if that sounds wrong, I don't wish to offend in any way.
