I have work colleagues, family members and neighbours who are accountants and so on who cannot wire a plug or fix a garden gate. Plenty of numeracy skills but utterly lacking in common sense and practicality.

That's true. I used to come across boffins who took the backs off faulty TVs reckoning they could mend them. What a mess they made.

Spot on! They tend to be able to split the atom and discover DNA, that sort of thing but ask them to fit a plug and they are useless.
