Horrible things, and dangerous.
One good thing, though, is that many drivers seem to avoid the inside lane (which used to be the hard shoulder), which is very sensible in my opinion.
That, in effect, is keeping the inside lane as a hard shoulder for breakdowns and emergency vehicles in case of a major accident.
Of course, there will always be those who continue to use it.
And there have already been deaths on them .
The inside lane is used mostly by heavy lorries who are governed to about 60 mph .
These are the vehicles that have and will kill people.

The lethal insanity of 'smart' motorways.

Re: How did lorry driver not realize

It all boils down to one thing - money.

What they should have done is build a new hard shoulder next to the existing one but, of course, that costs money. Money for the building work; money to pay to the land owners; etc.
They could then simply convert the old hard shoulder into a new inside lane, repainting and changing cats' eyes, etc.
But the government doesn't like spending money unless, of course, it's on such things as vanity projects (HS2), etc.

Could it be a stunt for Car Throttle?
How did the VW get in that position?
If it joined the A40 from a sliproad in front of the lorry, how did it end up sideways?
If it did join the A40 and was 'clipped' by the lorry, surely the lorry driver would have noticed and pulled over?
Pushing a car along the road sideways would have meant plenty of friction and a huge reduction in the speed of the lorry
When the vehicles eventually stopped, why didn't the lorry driver reverse from the VW's drivers door?
If the police can prove this was a stunt then all involved should be prosecuted and banned, on a busy road like that what on earth were they thinking. The driver of the car appeared very calm, maybe in shock, and Royal Mail are investigating.

One or both were both driving without due care and attention but it looks as if the police are not taking any action.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said the officers came across the incident while on a routine patrol.

They added: “Officers spoke with both parties. No arrests were made.”

Of course the police took no action.

No-one called anyone else a nasty name.
