Should MP's Have More Security?

Yes, they should

There have been many more threats to MPs and some have been attacked physically and verbally as well.
Surely an armed Police presence should accompany them to venues.
Also, a discretely armed security person should be their Surgery too
It will be difficult to give 24 hour protection, especially in their homes.
Perhaps MP’s should have a Gun Licence for their homes.

Deranged persons can get in anywhere as witnessed when an intruder got into the Queen’s Bedroom, some time ago but was quickly apprehended.

Maybe they should e given a special allowance just for this purpose.

Only if they pay for it themselves , its a risk they take with their job ..

And anyone can be attacked by a deranged person , in many jobs and walks of life .

Re: Should MP's Have More Security?

I shudder to think of the logistics involved and the cost.
There's over 600 MP's .. and proper security would surely entail 24/7 cover, not just when they're about their constituency duties. Then there's their families.

I think it's more a case of they're as vulnerable as any high profile figure or celebrity who might, sadly, draw the attention of a nutcase or ill wisher.

Re: Should MP's Have More Security?

It is outrageous the Tony Blair costs the tax payer £16.000.00 per week for security when he and his wife are earning millions yearly.

He should definately pay for his own security.

That would help to cover the cost of MP's security

Unless you put MPs in a bullet proof glass box they won't be safe.

Part of their job is being accessible to the public along with many other occupations.

Well some MPs never hold surgeries at all .
Andrew McKay was the Tory MP for Bracknell Forest and in the 27 years he was MP never held a surgery .
( He did however manage to rip off the taxpayers for the maximin amount in the expenses scandel )
His successor another Tory MP has never held a surgery either .

Re: Should MP's Have More Security?

I don't see how it would work. Jeremy Corbyn goes to work on a bike. I saw a video of him being harrassed for miles in the street by a Murdoch tv reporter. That was bad enough but are they to be corralled in armoured vehicles like Obama, with cordons of armed men around them? Even that wouldn't stop a determined gunman, or even a kid with a slingshot.

I agree that ex-priministers get round the clock security details.

The risk of assassination is high and a very real threat.

MP's Surgery openings should be accounted for, and it is true there are a number of dishonest MP's from all Parties, who do not give value for money.

There are also dishonest peoplei in other walks of live as well.

Re: Should MP's Have More Security?

Some MP's recently voiced concern about security for MP's due to the increase in threats of violence against them .by Email and on Facebook too.
In fact mudered MP, Jo Cox reported some instances as well

On TV one MP brought the subjeect up in the House and said "The lack of security for MP's could lead to the death of an MP.

Sadly this came true.
