IIRC, a few years ago, some Spanish hospitals were refusing to treat Brits under the EHIC scheme and were charging for their services.
Considering that Switzerland, a "third country" is a member of the EHIC scheme but not a member of the EU, why won't the UK be allowed to continue as a member?
