Des Res !

Spent the day with friends - and was fascinated to watch these very busy wasps in the garden. They have commandeered an empty bird box and are in the process of nest building. They have almost closed the entrance and are building under the 'eaves' as well.

Hope you didn't get too close, they can be nasty? Their homes are amazing though. I had White tailed Bumble Bees in mine a few years ago.

How lovely - I love bees.

These wasps just never stopped all day. Do wasps hibernate - is that why they are nest building? Don't know much about them. Took the photo from a very safe distance!!

Re: Des Res !

I was watching lots of wasps going in and out under my roof, they must have nested there .

My son wanted to get someone to get rid of them but I said leave them they don't bother me . Wasps are pollinators and pest controllers eating aphids and caterpillars so serve a useful purpose.

I think most wasps die off in the winter but the queen hibernates.

Re: Des Res !

this has made me cringe. I had a wasps nest in my house once. I hadn't realised what was happening but I kept finding dead wasps in my bathroom. I contacted the pest people and they came out, told me *would you like to look what we found* oh my goodness it was the size of a football, it was horrible. Wasps are vile creatures, just down right nasty. I believe we could live without the evil creatures.

Bees are another thing, I have no fear of them whatsoever.

Re: Des Res !

While they are living creatures and good for the garden I just can't warm to them .

Memories of their sting never fade .

Re: Des Res !

In the garden - they are welcome. In the house they are not.

As Muddy said - their sting is unforgettable - and they seem to do it for fun. Unlike bees - who will only sting in self defence.
