A lot of brits have a problem with large open spaces and
silence.
I think it they find it intimidating because, unlike most of
uk, they are not entirely in control of things, and may have
to think for themselves in certain situations, and not have a
ready made solution to any problem they may encounter!
Silence is not something they are used to! and if they dont
have internet connection it is a disaster. They dont seem to
think being able to sit and listen to the silence is a big deal!
I suppose it is just a clash of cultures really!

I actually go looking for such places Donkeyman, and if I ever have the good fortune to visit Australia (a place I love ) the great outback where nothing much happens will be the top of my 'to do' list....The hot weather and so much silence it would be deafening.... Someone once said: "The English have a love for desolate places"...Yep that's me....

That's what I love about Australia, the big red emptiness of it.Although it's not really empty, there's a lot of things out there really.

When I came here in the 1960s they did say cobber as well as fair dinkum, sheila, darl, zac etc but these days you only hear pollies using such expressions when they want to appear true blue, Aussie battlers.

And I've been here since 1974 and I absolutely love this country. I have learned about spiders, snakes, sharks and lots of other animals which are out to get you.
So, just be careful setting foot on Aussie soil.

And remember that not all Australian things that are thrown off, necessarily return.
