Well Mags, I don't know how old you are, but this is an over 50 forum, so you must be 50 anyway....and I would say we have to be very careful with sports after we are these ages......

I wouldn't dare even try, and I was a good skater and good swimmer, but now I would be terrified...and like you, four wheels sounds good to me.....hahaha

Hi Filly, thanks for the reply.....I was beginning to think I was invisible.......hahahaha

Frozen ponds were great and that is what we had in Gananoque. I skated on the river and the creek....

In fact, Filly, my first date was with a guy to a skating party. He tied the skate laces and carried my skates. He was the mayor's son.

I was surprised when he asked me for a date to the skating party that his parents were throwing. The only reason my mom would let me go, was because he came from such a good family.

She wouldn't let me date anymore until I graduated from High School and that was the prom....so I only had 2 dates in all that time. I was brought up so strict, and my brothers (3) were aways on my tail ...... (scaring the boys off)

Mups, that is wonderful that you could roller skate. As I told Mags, it is harder to roller skate, than ice skate.....

Way to go Mups.....

OMGosh Blue...my parents gave me much more leeway than yours did. You sure were brought up strict. I only had one brother but he had 4 close friends...so one of them was always watching me also...(in my very young years).

Oh a skating date would've been amazing...followed by a party...lots of fun.

I was very liberal with my own kids too...

Re: Can You Ice Skate? Any Stories To Tell?

Thanks ladies. I actually fell loads of times but most of the falls were on my butt so it didn’t hurt as much but when I tripped over my front picks and fell on my face it hurt some. Plus I’d just had dental work done the day before and was worried I’d damaged my teeth or broke my nose but I didn’t. There was a bit of blood and some bruising but I would still do it all again. It was sooo much fun. It wouldn’t have made a nice photo but I have to admit that I had snow all over me.

The great thing about this type of ice skating is that it’s on a 2 km path so when you feel yourself about to fall you go to the edge and fall in the snow.

We’ve done a lot of pond and lake skating and I have to say it’s far more exciting that going to a boring ice rink.

Re: Can You Ice Skate? Any Stories To Tell?

I used to ice skate in my teens, every Saturday night at Richmond ice rink. Me and my sister shared a pair of skates as we couldn't afford a pair each and the hire boots were so painful to wear

Both of us become pretty good and progressed to speed skating

Haven't been skating for years. Theres only one rink here in NI and its too far to go

I was taking a face off at centre ice...when suddenly, I was flat on my back, my head hit the ice, not once but three times in all. It's certainly true that one sees stars during such an event.

The referees, of which my son was one...escorted me off the ice and into the penalty box...for "delay of game."

Later I ended up in the emergency dept...with a huge lump on the back of my head and a concussion...

I don't believe that I've skated since...
Oh my gosh Filly, I wonder how I missed this post of yours..........I always try to reply to everyone who post something interesting like this.......

That is quite an ordeal you went through there, gee, both you and I have had a lot of falls in our lifetime, eh? hahahaha.

I used to always have the picks on my figure skates filed off as I used to skate leaning forward a bit, and I would trip on them a lot, so finally, I decided I would stop the men's way instead of with the pick...........

I took figure skating lessons, but I wasn't any good at it........
My girlfriend did well, and eventually she taught it, even as an adult...

....I played ice hockey with my brothers and his friends. They usually stuck me in the net as a goalie, until my mom put her foot down as she was afraid I would get hurt with a flying puck........

Oh, I had a great childhood...living in a small town, we had to skate and swim as there wasn't much else to do. I went fishing a lot and loved picking the worms at night with the boys..........

Thought some of you may enjoy this, Not because they are Scottish but because they are excellent.
