It is not really the total memory of a phone that is important but what they call RAM which is the working area of the phone. I seem to recall that the iphone had 1Gb all the rest was storage whereas my Samsung has 3Gb of RAM plus 32Gb of internal storage plus 32Gb external storage (a Micro SD card - I think it can be up to 254Gb but currently I am only using 7Gb of the 32Gb so no need to expand it.)
The real limiting factor is the working memory (RAM) but mine even with many apps still has heaps left. An advantage of the later version of Android is that apps can be told to use the SD card so they take up less RAM.
My iPhone has 4GBs of RAM.
