We already have mutual recognition with other countries outside the EU, all over the world. For example, I can rent a car in the USA with my existing driving license and not have to take a driving test in the USA and obtain a USA driving license. It works the other way too.
Now we have left the EU we can continue to rent cars in the USA with our existing EU licenses and new UK ones will be treated the same - it will be the same for the USA wanting to rent cars here.
Agreed. Regarding driving licences, when I went to work in Italy in 1984 (well before such things were harmonised I might add), I was told by the HR dept that I had to have an Italian driving licence so, I gave up my UK licence and within days had a spanking new Italian one in my wallet. Didn't cost me a penny more than the annual renewal tax on driving licences
. When I returned to the UK, I simply handed in my Italian licence and it was replaced with a UK one.
