Are DVDs on the way out?

John Lewis announced yesterday that they will not be replacing their stock of DVD players when their current stock is sold. This is due to the rise in available streaming services.

Do you think other retailers will follow their example and is it the beginning of the end for the DVD?

I'm guessing that most of us have a collection of DVDs. i suppose eventually you won't be able to give them away, just like VHS videos.

I like them for the car and caravan. But at home I use the firestick to listen to music on line. I can see them being more useful in areas you cant get online.

As far as I know there are no plans to stop selling CDs although I can see that happening in the future, perhaps we will stream music directly to our car stereos.

I hope DVD players won't be fazed out. I've just bought a new one & in time I would like to replace it. I have hundreds of DVD films.

They've been on the way out for years now, Blu ray too. It's so much more convenient to simply stream a film.

Re: Are DVDs on the way out?

I like to have a way of watching films that doesn't rely on an Internet connection, so I hope players will be around for a good while yet.

I sometimes watch streamed films via the Amazon Fire TV Stick but also enjoy watching my Blu-ray box sets and collection of 3D and other films on a Blu-ray player.

That's the thing isn't it. My parents have no internet connection and never will but they do have quite a few DVDs.

I agree, it is, if you have internet and if you have a good signal. I'm not sure if films are always available though. For instance, we watch certain DVDs and Blurays every Christmas but they might not be available online.
