Re: You Can’t Beat A Nice Homemade Pastie!

I hated onions years ago and would never touch them. Now I can’t imagine any food cooked without the addition, and have even got to like the red too.

Do like the sound of home made pasties...

They sound delish Arty...I might try them but after Christmas I'm on a strict regime between now and then.

Bought the MIL one of these kind of devices before as she often makes pasties, but she rarely uses it. Just makes them freeform all raggedy by hand. Do you make yours by hand Art?

I suppose I could try your recipe but with Quorn mince, that way Mrs LDs can eat them too. Maybe a bit of curry paste to give it a bit more flavour as Quorn doesn't really taste of much on its own.

What about some good chunky mushrooms instead Longdogs, like portabellos.

Whenever, l cook roast beef, l always keep some to make pasties.
I make shortcrust pastry, cut into shape using a small side plate.
I either mince the beef or cut into small pieces. I boil some diced potato, carrots and swede. I also add left over vegetables, like peas or runner beans, if l have those too.
I put everything into a bowl, l chop a raw onion very finely by hand or in my mini chopper. I season and sprinkle a beef Oxo over the meat and vegetables that l have left a small bit of vegetable water in, so it’s not dry.
I spoon the mixture onto the pastry rounds that l have dampened at the edges. I fold the pastry over to seal the mixture in, prick the pastry and brush with beaten egg.
I cook at approx 180c until golden brown. At half way, l brush them again with the beaten egg.

They are so tasty and cheap as chips!
Arty, is a pastie like a pie or a tart? Sounds just wonderful. Wish I was there to help sample it.

Re: You Can’t Beat A Nice Homemade Pastie!

I remember my granny making them when we were in Cornwall where she lived. She always baked then in an old wood/coal range. Baking then there was no need to add gravy as the juices from the meat provided the moisture.

Little folklore about Pasties and miners. A proper pastie was made of meat at one end and the other end had the second course. Now the miners took them into the tin mines in Cornwall but never ate all of the pastie but they could have a proper meal while under ground.

I was told on good authority by my grandmother that the miners always left an end on the pastie on rocks for the "Knockers" (cornish type elves) to have something to eat. In return these Knockers made sure the mines were safe until the next day

no nothing like
here is how to make one

She suggested "skirt" (as the meat) if you misheard

of course you can adapt as you wish as to what to add to the
meat in the way of veg.

Maybe... I'm not over keen on mushrooms though.
