We have it. It's better, but not mind blowing.
The UK is behind on other stuff as well. My mobile signal at home for example is pretty poor. The wife is Slovak, and the last time we went there, the mobile signal seemed to be pretty much 100% everywhere. Much better than here where it's often hit and miss.

I've been on cable since it came to our area in 1995. It was Cabletel back then, later to become NTL and then Virgin Media. A few ups and downs over the years but generally not too bad.

According to speedtest.net, a download speed of 223.7Mbps. Upload is 11.6Mbps

That is fast but when I was in Shanghai in 2000 they were advertising Gigabit broadband.

Now that is fast. What I find is that even though I get good results from speed tests, web pages or sites only arrive as fast as the servers and Internet backbone can deliver them. This sometimes isn't very fast.

I wonder if Shanghai would find the same? A gigabit is possible under ideal conditions but if requesting a web page from somewhere else in the world, would that speed be restricted by servers and infrastructures, so not really making the speed a gigabit?

There's also the issue of your own wifi, our router appears to have a max transmission of 65Mbps which is slower than BT say I could get from the cabinet which is about 50 feet away. As it is we get nearly 20Mbps on the copper and I've never found it restrictive, it's just the upload speeds that are low.

I should probably add that the main computer I get the 200+ speed on is hard wired to the router.

This is what I am getting at the moment. Will have to see what the fibre optic upgrade can do, when we get it and the new router.

I have had fibre for many years but I haven't tested it for ages

Early on in the piece I complained about the slow speeds I was getting and it did improve. If I test at the box on the wall I get about 97Mbs down and 40mbs up (I pay for 100/40Mbs which is the maximum available under the NBN)

At my computer it is usually about 75/37Mbs but I do have a pretty extensive wired LAN behind my router with NASs, printers, switches etc

BTW I am an ex BT Engineer too though in my day it was called PO Telephones (and "engineer" is overstating my qualifications I only have C&G)

This is a test from about 4/5 years ago in the middle of the day.

When I joined it was GPO telephones way back in 1972. no electronic switchboards back then even in firms. Used to have a stack if reference books to different types of systems called "plans" , ie plan 107/105 the boss sec. setup and small manual boards (2+4- 3+12- 4+18. lines and extns)
Good old days until BT went private and everything changed
