Re: Your first computer

My first computer was a Dick Smith System 80 - I read it was sold as a Video Genie in the UK but that might not be accurate, it was a challenger to the Tandy TRS 80 and made in Asia. It used a Z80 processor.

In 1980 it cost me $750 which was a lot of money in those days and I think it had 16K of RAM.

That was my next computer after the System 80. The Commodore 64 introduced me to BBSs and the possibilities of on line communications with a 300 baud modem.

It was soon followed by the Commodore 128D which was my favourite computer for many years. I even learned to write programs in machine language for it.

Yep, the best was the Gazette (from the US) which had a checksum for machine language programming so you couldn't make a mistake. The 64 was where I learned Basic and this 'skill' continues to this day with VBA in M$ Office, it is so useful.

My favourite was the DOS based Quick Basic which was a great language to program in.

Re: Your first computer

Mine was an Amstrad 286 which was a lovely machine. Got me completely hooked on computers and now I earn my living off them, yet I bought it originally to help with my writing.

Re: Your first computer

I'm a graduate from an old ZX81 (which I still have somewhere) and remember saving up and buying the massive 16k ram pack, complete with wobbly connection which used to crash it just when you didn't want it to. I remember some of the accessories which were available, such as a colour board, hi-res graphics card, a box which it sat in and gave you something resembling a keyboard. I did buy the dedicated tape recorder which was supposed to reduce the loading reliability, (but never did). It wasn't long before I ditched it and went up to a Spectrum 48k.

Same here. Mind you the typesetters at the magazine often muddled the symbols up anyway, so even if you typed it in exactly right you were never guaranteed to see it running.
