Thats just another sign to me that this is the way all payments are headed now, towards an all electric money world, far easier for them to keep taking it off you, the onus will be on you to stop payment and correct mistakes not them, cash is fast becoming a memory, the ability for them to rip you off every time is there if you don't watch them like a Hawk, and old folks are not as sharp now as they were when they were younger.

Re: Being Excluded by Technology.

Oh why can't we use money it was invented before phones.
We as a family have one day out all together and last year we decided to go by steam train to Waymouth, I drove to our local station the night before and it said the price for all day parking was £8, that evening we rummaged around for 8 pound coins.
The next day arrived at the car park, it said card payment only, well it was dark.

That is great as I don't have a mobile phone. What makes these people think that every Tom Dick and Harry has one ?

Sorry Steve, but what´s wrong with not using a land-line? I´ve had mine disconnected, and have no problems. Could you explain please? Cheers.

To me it's yet another thoughtless way the world's excluding people and it is just plain wrong! stevmk2
I think the whole premise is wrong almost luddite. A mobile phone is not just a phone indeed the phone part it a very minor part of its usefulness. For deaf people it provides so much more and there are plenty of specialist apps just for that purpose. It has NFC (Near Filed Communication) built in which is hardly used but should be. (It really annoys me that I have to carry an Opal card to use public transport when my phone alone could do the job.) In my opinion a deaf person should not be without one, the video phone aspect alone is a great boon for them not to mention speech to text apps and many other apps designed specifically for the deaf.

If you forget the 'phone' and use the multiplicity of other things that it is then you might be persuaded to embrace the technology it offers.

Personally I think they are brilliant and the phone part is probably the least used and least useful part of it the mobile 'phone' is a revolutionary device for everybody including the deaf and blind.

On that basis you wouldn't need car parks anyway because could still use horses which were used for transport before cars. The only problem is that we would all be up to our arses in horse shit.

Re: Being Excluded by Technology.

I have a small Nokia 'Phone that is just basic and I use it solely to send / receive texts.

It's Pay-As-You-Go as that's all I can afford and I simply do not have the money to spare for telephone contracts.

My hearing is beyond the Loop & Hearing aid on the T position now so I can't use a mobile to make / receive 'phone calls - just texts.

I will check out whether I could possibly get a Smart 'Phone without entering into a contract but to be honest all I want really is to be able contact people by established means and for me that now seems to mean letters only as many are ignoring emails altogether.

Why?!

I don't think that my request is unreasonable as there must be millions of others who do not want, cannot use or cannot afford a Smart 'Phone and not everyone has access to a PC either!

2-wheeler my MIL is almost 91 and very frail and it was agreed within the family that we'd use Landlines to keep in contact with her as she's very confused about mobiles and just about all the modern technology.

The Voicemail she left on my wife's mobile was just her saying "hello - hello" several times because she doesn't understand it all.

The problem is Brother-in-law NEVER has his landline on answering machine if he's unavailable, so if MIL rings him in an emergency and he's out, he knows nothing about it and nor do we.

He is closest to her, (30mins by car), and that's why it was all agreed he'd be the main "monitor" for her and we take over when he's away.

This is why we told her to always ring landlines as we all have built-in Ansaphones. OK? stevmk2

Welcome to the group. sounds that you have the ideal place to live. Here in the UK we are overwhelmed with rules and regulations, at lot from the EEC (Europe) in brussels.

These beaurocrats have to try and justify their jobs so think up the most stupid regulations you can think of and many more besides.

Just one of thousands of examples

If a child falls over in a playground and gets a graze the person in charge of the playground is not allowed to help, TRUE. They have to have a second person in attendance and only a first aider can apply a bandage.

That is how bad it has got, honestly. the Health and safety regime have gone overboard to the extent you almost can't sneeze in public, and no doubt that will come into force soon as well.

Children can't compete against each other, even in a school sports day race as one child may feel they are inferior to the winner.

It has got so bad I am glad I am a pensioner and never got bought up mollycoddled and wrapped in so much cotton wool
