Hi Steve - thanks for explanation - I meant no criticism. I“ve recently gone “landline-less“ and was interested if others had thought along the same lines (sorry!) Obviously it makes sense in your particular situation. Why someone should not leave their answerphone on is puzzling - such a useful invention.

We would love to get rid of the land line but it's not possible here to get internet without the phone line. I believe there is a satellite option but its not as reliable as the phone line one.

If you can get a mobile signal, then you can use a “dongle“ to connect to internet, although it can occasionally be a bit slow and intermittent. But at £7.50 a month I can live with that. Bit different to the £16 odd line rental rip-off.
