It is just plug in and go ... no setup disc, etc, and it works perfectly with my Windows 8.1 notebook ... I do have VLC Media Player installed ... and I can read and record CD's and DVD's with no problem.
Good luck Lorretta ... so annoying when things won't work !!!!
I learned a lot from this episode too
Many years ago I bought a Dell 10 Netbook which didn't have a DVD drive so I bought an LG Portable Super Multi Drive (a posh name for a USB DVD writer) and I remember installing the drivers as being a quite long winded fiddly business - because until the drivers were installed the drive didn't work so you couldn't load the drivers from the supplied disk - a real Catch 22. When it was finally working I basically only used it to install some programs on my netbook from DVD (M$ Office etc) - once done never used it again and it was stuffed in a cupboard and forgotten.
As I originally said I thought the installation might be the problem so I dug my old LG player out. It was only then I remembered my netbook ran XP in those days when plug and play was in its infancy not only that but that netbook was now running Unbuntu/Linux.
To try this out I fired up both the netbook and my Lenovo laptop (WIN7) and tried plugging the USB DVD device into to each in turn. To my amazement it worked almost immediately in both. No manual installation of drivers the operating systems did that automatically and knew exactly what to do - Brilliant! Actually the Unbuntu system handled it slightly better if anything and immediately played the DVD I loaded in VLC.
About 30 minutes ago I came across the info about WIN8 (which I loathe with a passion) not having a DVD licence and logged in to find Jazzi already knew.
BTW my LG Portable Super Multi Drive is back in its cupboard probably never to be used again.
