The modern pirates in the Indian Ocean near the Yeman, Northern Kenya, etc, are evil little sods. Certain countries and some companies are now thinking of arming their merchant fleet in these waters. Having served at sea, I don't blame them, but then a fire hose at full pressure would have a similar effect and could quite easily deter most pirates from getting aboard. Alternatively, heading straight for the pirate vessel at full speed, bearing in mind some of these ships are now 100 - 200,000 tons can also be very daunting and frightening.
