Traditional Signs of Winter

This came up in the Daily ... heavily berried hollies. And I added an unusually heavy acorn crop. What other traditional lore can you think of?

Re: Traditional Signs of Winter

"Cats scratch a post before wind,
Wash their faces before rain,
Sit with their backs to the fire before snow."

I must remember to watch Cassie Cat from now on!

Another one I remember is:

"A warm November is a sign of a bad winter to come"

The early migration of birds can signal a hard winter...

My dear old Dad use to say if there were a lot of robins around it would be a bad winter.

I wonder why Eileen maybe because if it is green/mild there are more germs about with no frost to kill them off...
